ATV 120: Private Pilot Theory
Course will consist of Lectures, lab work (Flight Simulator), videos, and flight time (Flight time is with the EAA Young Eagles program). This course covers all aspects of the Private Pilot Ground School training to become a pilot. The student will learn the National Airspace System, aviation weather, aerodynamics, aircraft systems, and navigation.
The course goes in depth and is designed to develop the skills and knowledge that will help prepare you for flight training. This is an intense course and must be taken prior to beginning of flight instructions. This course is now a dual credit program with Ivy Tech Community College.
The course will cover the following aviation topics:
Aeronautical charts and the national airspace system
Aircraft structure and aerodynamics
Aircraft systems
Air traffic control procedures
Airport operations
Environmental factors
FAA regulations
Meteorology
Navigation
Principles of flight
Radio communication
Upon course completion, students will be able to:
Pass the FAA private pilot written exam with a minimum score of 70%.
Continue training toward receiving their Private or LSA Pilot Certificate.
Demonstrate the practical applications of math, science, and technology as applied to pilot certification.
Identify the opportunities within aviation, including corporate, commercial, and aviation careers.

Teaching Methods:
All class meetings will consist of, but not limited to, lectures, audio and video presentations, discussions, and guest speakers.
Class Policy:
You will be expected to have read the assigned chapters prior to class. If an absence is anticipated, the student should contact one of the instructors in advance to make prior arrangements. Absences are particularly significant in this course since each class represents a significant portion of the total course. Discuss any extenuating circumstances with your instructor.
Class Conduct:
Class starts promptly at 12:00 PM and ends approximately at 2:00 PM
Class will have a two 10-minute breaks.
Drinks are allowed, however the classroom must remain spotless and clean.
Students are encouraged to help each other and create an atmosphere of cooperation.
Students must not miss more than two classes without instructor permission. Any missed classes will require special oral/written testing of subject material missed.
The student is expected to keep up with all reading assignments and tests.
The instructors will be available for additional instruction at the instructor’s discretion.
The objective is to learn, have fun, and enjoy achieving your goals. Upon completion of the course the student will receive an endorsement to take the written exam.
Upcoming Class:
Will take place every week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM, starting on Aug 9, 2023. Registration is now open in till July 31st.
Prerequisites:
⦁ High School Students (Grades 11-12)
⦁ Minimum age 16.
⦁ It is suggested that the parent/guardian and student meet with the instructor before enrolling.
⦁ Student should have a strong aptitude in math and science. The student must be able to dedicate 4 to 5 hours of homework per week.
⦁ Must be enrolled in the IVY Tech dual credit program.
Instructor(s):
Mr. Roger Tomey, USAF, AGI, UASI, A.C.T. Director
Mr. Tomey is a private pilot. He obtained a degree in Labor Relations from Indiana University. He is also the cofounder and founding President of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 1354. He is the former director of Indiana Aerospace Senior High School. He is a retired manager of CSX Transportation Corporation.
